Excelencias del Motor 200 km Classic Race (Gallery) is an event organized by the Havana Provincial Sports Division and advised by the Cuban Cycling Federation, with the collaboration of Excelencias del Motor magazine. The event will be held on December 9, 2018.
The event engulfs six road cycling categories: Elite (men’s and women’s), Master A (30 -39 years old), Master B (40-49 years old), Master C (50-59 years old) and Master D (+60 years old). In line with its name, the Elite and A-B Master categories will be covering 200 km. People under 50 who are interested in fulfilling the challenge, but do not want to compete, will have seven hours to cover 200 km. As for C - D Master categories, the race will be 130 km long. Likewise, cyclists over 50 will have to cover the distance in less than six hours.
All cyclists that finish the challenge will be recognized by giving them an Excelencias del Motor 200 km Classic Race medal. Moreover, the first three positions in each category will be given prizes. Some judges will be traveling with the cyclists and there will be another group positioned in different spots in order to guarantee the truthfulness of the race. A so-called “end-of-the-event car” will be in charge of picking up the cyclists that are not capable of finishing the race. Once they get on this car, they will be automatically disqualified.
The start/finish line will be located at the Havana-Pinar del Rio Highway, right at the intersection with San Antonio de los Banos Highway (Novia del Mediodia). The first group will start the race at 8:00 am, with categories C, D and all cyclist willing to fulfill the challenge. Competitors under 50, only going for the challenge, will have to go all the way to the 100th km and return to the finish line so as to complete the 200 km established for the race. The second group will kick off at 9:00 am with elite (men’s and women’s) Masters A-B categories. This entire group will be racing and those who cover the distance in less than seven hours will be given the “Excelencias del Motor 200 km Cyclist” medal.
Checkpoints and supply spots will be set at kilometers 65th, 100th and 135th. Moreover, cyclists could be given supplies by supporting cars and motorcycles once they go beyond the 50th kilometer through the 170th, if authorized by the head organizer. Over the last 30 km of the race, technical assistance will be only provided to the last members of the pack.

Beyond a race, this cycling event is a challenge for each competitor. It was designed by combining the characteristics of a long-distance race (these races were created in Italy, with the participation of elite, master cyclists and walkers, who cover long distances with 150 km as limit per day) and classic competitions (races that were also conceived in Europe and include high-level elite cyclists, with distances over 200 km a day).
However, putting cyclists from six categories - elite (men’s and women’s) and Master- with athletes over 65 in the same session turns this event into a more appealing development for cycling enthusiasts. Over 200 cyclists are expected to compete, similar to the 2017 edition, in two packs with an hour of difference.
